To all members of the North Carolina NAACP,
We pray that each of you is enjoying the hope and opportunity that a new year can bring. As 2016 begins, we recognize that our fight for justice and equity is far from over. The year 2015 ended with uncertainty about the judges ruling on our court case challenging the draconian effects and mal-intentions of North Carolina’s “monster” voter suppression bill, HB589. Still in effect are harmful policies and actions taken by our state legislature to refuse Medicaid Expansion and to attack our immigrant and LGBTQ brothers and sisters. In order to overcome the forces of oppression and marginalization that bring violence against our human right to live free and to thrive, we must remain steadfast in the moral movement for justice. For these reasons and more, your attendance at this year’s winter training session is critically important. It is mandatory that all unit officers and executive committee members of the NC NAACP register and plan to attend the 2016 Winter Training Session, which will be held on Saturday, January 23, 2016 from 8:00am until 4:30pm at Abundant Life Christian Church [4400 Old Poole Road, Raleigh, NC 27610]. Please secure your lodging for the NC NAACP winter session rate at the Holiday Inn Express, [3741 Thistledown Drive, Raleigh NC, (919-854-001)] on or before January 14.
Following the training session we will hold our 32nd annual Humanitarian Banquet where the Honorable Representative Henry M. (Mickey) Michaux will be the honoree. Over the course of his tenure as the longest serving member of the NC General Assembly, Representative Micheaux has earned the affectionate designation "the Dean of the Legislature". This year the NC NAACP will honor the Dean for his lifelong commitment to Voting Rights and Civil Rights, which is attested by his voting record, as well as his bipartisan work to uphold these values across party lines. While the training is geared specifically towards NC NAACP branch members and officers, the Humanitarian Banquet is open to all ticket holders. To purchase tickets for the 32nd Annual Humanitarian Banquet or Souvenir Journal Ads, please see the link indicated below.
If we take seriously our stand against against injustice, we must not fight ill-equipped and unprepared. Our mighty North Carolina State Conference is one band with one sound. It is imperative that all NAACP local leaders—elected and appointed drum majors for justice—are properly trained in the policies, procedures and practices of the NAACP (the nation’s oldest civil rights organization). This year we will focus the majority of our training on our mass GOTV campaign—“Our Time Our Vote” which we are proud to implement in partnership with Democracy NC. Linked below is the Registration Form to be completed and returned by January 15, 2016 along with the Officer Report Form. Finally, our youth and young adults are essential to the strength and sustainability of this organization and of every civil rights movement. Please make sure that your Youth Council knows that their presence during the entire training day is extremely important to the success of this movement.
May God continue to guide, protect and sustain you in your work. We are looking forward to seeing you at the training this January. May 2016 be your best year yet. Happy New Year!
Yours in the spirit of justice and peace,
Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II
President, NC NAACP and National Board Member, NAACP
Rev. Michelle Laws
Executive Director, NC NAACP
