All of you are great gifts to the world because of your service in the cause of justice. In this season let us remember that in the Christian tradition, Jesus was a brown-skinned baby, born in occupied territory, and terrorized by the mass-murder of a puppet-King who felt his power threatened. Those who want to hear the glad tidings of “peace on earth, good will to all people” this year should challenge our political leaders to put the refugee Jesus back into Christmas. We who worship a Jewish/Palestinian baby born in Bethlehem should know better than to stand on the side of oppression and racism.
In the NCNAACP AND FORWARD TOGETHER MORAL MOVEMENT as we meditate during this holy season, let us remember the true reason for the season. And let us promote peace (shalom) and goodwill among all with a commitment to never go backwards.
Let us love and embrace one another which is the greatest gift.
Finally let us help America remember what the lady in the New York harbor said long ago:
"Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
